In this interview, Martin discusses his early career, day-to-day inspirations and top advice to aspiring hairdressers.
How did your passion for hairdressing come about?
I’ve always been a creative person who loves interacting with others and meeting new people. Hairdressing is an ideal way to exercise my skills and build relationships with clients.
Years of hard work and winning the Hairdresser of the Year Award for Wales and South-West England twice meant I was fortunate enough to be asked to judge the awards in 2017. This gave me a platform to share my creative thoughts and hopefully further the careers of the winning teams.
Where did you train/ get work experience from in the early years of your career?
I trained locally and often worked backstage at fashion shows, beauty shoots and local charity events to gain experience and build a strong client base.
It’s important for aspiring stylists to realise that a natural talent for hairdressing is just the start. It’s essential to understand all aspects of the business. By starting as a salon assistant and working your way up you learn the ins and outs of the industry, develop excellent customer service skills and appreciate the hard work that goes into building a successful salon.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
Current and future hair and fashion trends inspire me on a daily basis. I love the challenge of adapting a high-fashion hair trend to suit a client in a manageable way. A thorough consultation is essential to develop my ideas and enable me to understand a client’s unique requirements.
If you were stuck on a desert island, which 3 hair products would you take with you?
Only 3?! I’m not sure I can travel that light but, if pushed, I’d need a shampoo to overcome the effects of the salt water, a hydrating leave-in masque to protect my hair against the sun, and finally a versatile styling product to keep my hair in shape ready for my rescue!
If you could give one piece of hair advice what would it be?
HYDRATION! HYDRATION! HYDRATION!
People underestimate how important it is to visit a salon regularly. Trained professionals know exactly how to maintain your style and improve the health of your hair – it’s what we do!
